Student Fatally Shot in Antioch High School Tragedy

A tragic incident has unfolded at Antioch High School in Nashville, Tennessee, where a 16-year-old female student, Josselin Corea Escalante, has lost her life in a shooting. The shooter, a 17-year-old male student identified as Solomon Henderson, fatally shot himself after firing multiple rounds in the school cafeteria around 11 a.m. CT.

According to authorities, the shooter was armed with a pistol and entered the cafeteria, firing multiple shots that struck Escalante. Another 17-year-old male student sustained a graze wound to his arm and was taken to the hospital, where he was later released. A second male student was treated for a facial injury resulting from a fall.

Investigation Underway

The motive behind the shooting remains unclear, but Nashville Police Chief John Drake stated that authorities are investigating "some materials on the internet." Witnesses reported seeing people shot and fleeing the scene, with one student expressing the immense pain and grief he felt after witnessing the tragic events.

The school does conduct student searches, but it lacks metal detectors. In light of the incident, the school district is considering the implementation of additional safety measures, including the installation of stationary metal detectors.

School Lockdown and Response

Antioch High School was placed on lockdown following the shooting and will remain closed for the rest of the week. Students were transported to Ascension Saint Thomas Hospital, where they were reunited with their parents. A SWAT team cleared the school, and Tennessee State Troopers, state Homeland Security Special Agents, and the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation are assisting in the ongoing investigation.

Reaction and Condolences

Governor Bill Lee expressed his gratitude to law enforcement and first responders for their swift response and ongoing investigation. He joined Tennesseans in praying for the victims, their families, and the school community during this difficult time.

The tragedy has left the Antioch community and the entire Nashville area in mourning. Parents expressed their heartbreak and disbelief, emphasizing the importance of cherishing loved ones and expressing affection every day.
